The Hoodia Diet: The Appetite Suppressant
Background InformationHoodia is a very popular ingredient used in many natural supplements. It is used as an appetite suppressant in South African tribes and has become a big part of the weight loss industry. South African tribes used Hoodia to suppress their appetite when going on long hunting trips. It is suppose to trick the brain into feeling full. (see source 1) The ingredient became widely popular as weight loss manufacturers were in search for an alternative for ephedra after it became banned from the US by the FDA. Many feel that Hoodia should not be used because it hasn't undergone sufficient testing to be used as a daily or weekly diet product. Tribes used it only on hunting trips from time to time but not on a daily basis. Many scientists are worried about this situation. They can't understand its complete effects yet and draw caution to incorporating it into our daily regime. No one knows if it actually does work. Substantial data has yet to be published to undergo scrupulous review. Although there have been numerous efficacy tests done that demonstrate positive results, we can only wait. The effects are yet unknown. (see source 2) The Hoodia Scam (Buyers Beware) - Fake Hoodia Being UsedHoodia is expensive to make and it doesn't come easy either. For that reason, manufacturers cut corners just to make that extra dollar. Fake hoodia is put in place of the real hoodia to cut costs, but how do you know if true authentic Hoodia is being used? The reality is that you can't. It is very hard to know if real or fake Hoodia is being used, although one way of telling is by checking the price. Checking the price of the product is a good way of quickly checking if Hoodia is real. (Hoodia is usually expensive to make.) Another tip to look out for is to check if there is a sufficient amount being used. If there's not enough, it's probably not going to be effective. Mike Adams from natural news feels there is a large portion of the health industry using fake Hoodia (as much as 80%) and feels that even after getting the seal of approval, many manufactures will switch back to their old dirty ways to maximize profit. (see source 3) Where to Buy Hoodia? (Sources of real Hoodia recommended by Mike Adams): Hoodia Lawsuits: Manufacturers Against SuppliersSometimes it's just not the manufacture's fault but the source of ingredients. In some cases, the South African suppliers will try to cheapskate the manufacture by sending them counterfeit Hoodia instead of the real stuff. (see source 4) For this reason, lawsuits have been flying all over the place while manufacturers check their source and file lawsuits against suppliers. SummaryDon't be completely discouraged by Hoodia. Time will tell if Hoodia holds up to future tests and how better we are able to regulate it. Suggestions: Buy from a reputable brand and a reputable store. There is still pure Hoodia out there and with the sufficient amount, this ingredient will be prevalent in our health industry. Sources
